weihnachtsmarkt-xanten[1]Xanten Weihnachtsmarkt.jpg  Xanten Tempel 2.jpg

Xanten is situated on the so-called ‘Lower Rhine’, an area north-west of Cologne bordering The Netherlands. It is famous for its fine Gothic cathedral but most of all for its archaeological park where the Roman town of Xanten was once situated. It has been reconstructed, complete with perimeter wall, amphitheatre, bathhouses and much more to explore. Xanten’s Christmas market is small yet sophisticated. The Old Quarter, where you also find the cathedral is filled with about 35 huts offering a wide selection of gift ideas.  Highlights include a ‘living’ nativity scene and an exhibition of historical toys.

In total contrast the Christmas Market at Kempen has 170 exhibitors, offering everything from traditional arts and crafts to gifts and homemade items. After a stroll through Kempen’s historical centre you can enjoy special stage events on Buttermarkt Square.

Our tour is based in the Hotel Nibelungenhof (German ***) in the centre of Xanten.  The name reminds us of the fact that Siegfried, hero of the Nibelungen Sagas, was born in Xanten.  Our hotel has no restaurant but can recommend and book you into 5 good restaurants within 300 meters of the hotel.
