Northumberland is a region of dramatic locations from Hadrian’s Wall guarding the Northern Roman frontier to enchanting castles, miles of heritage coastline and spectacular gardens.  See all this and more on our highlights tour.

Our stay for the next 4 nights is at the Holiday Inn, Seaton Burn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a modern hotel set in 16 acres of land and conveniently located 6 miles north of the vibrant city centre.  The bedrooms are situated on just 2 floors, all en-suite and are equipped with remote control colour T.V. with in-house movies, direct dial telephone, radio, trouser press, hairdryer and tea/coffee making facilities.  There is no lift but plenty of ground floor bedrooms.  As well as the restaurant and cocktail bar, public areas include a complimentary onsite health and fitness Leisure Club with 15 metre indoor heated swimming pool, steamroom, sauna, Jacuzzi and solarium or if you prefer outdoor leisure there is a 3-hole pitch and putt.

Day One An early departure travelling to the hotel near Newcastle where we stop en route in historic Durham where the Cathedral area has been designated a World Heritage Site.

Day TwoToday we follow the heritage coast with an excursion to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.  Time at leisure to explore the village, with optional visits to the Castle or Priory. Please note timings for this day will depend upon the tides.

Day Three After breakfast we travel along General George Wade’s “Military Road” following the path of Hadrian’s Wall to Chesters Roman Fort.  Chesters is home to the finest example of a Roman Bath House in existence today.  Afterwards visit Hexham and the charming town of Corbridge.  Freetime at Gateshead Quays if time permits.
