Steam Train coming into Kyle of LochalshGREAT HIGHLAND RAILWAYS (Loch an Eilein near Aviemore6 DAYS)

A railway adventure including scenery in areas of Scotland that are dramatic in different ways!  Coach tourists may have travelled these routes before by road, but from the comfort of a rail journey will enjoy a whole new perspective and many memorable views.

Wednesday  – Travel to the overnight stop at the 3 star Erskine Bridge Hotel located on the outskirts of Glasgow, close to the Erskine Bridge.  The hotel is located with pleasant views over the river.  We arrive in time for our Evening Meal.

Thursday  – We continue north through the Highlands to reach Aviemore and enjoy a short ride on the Strathspey Railway to Boat of Garten.  We continue to Inverness, the “city in the Highlands” for time at leisure before proceeding to our hotel for the next 3 nights at The Priory Hotel, Beauly (3 star) located in the picturesque village square of Beauly.  The bustling village is in the midst of some of Scotland’s finest mountains and glens.  Glen Affric, Glen Cannich and Strathfarrer are on Beauly’s doorstep. There is a lift to all rooms, most of which have bath and shower and all have trouser press and hair dryer with the hotel offering Sky TV in all of the rooms.

Friday  -  Today’s rail journey is the mainline service running along the eastern coastline which then turns inland across the moors to Thurso.  Enjoy some time in this remote Georgian town before returning to the hotel by coach.

Saturday  – The highlight for most people will be the spectacular train ride to Kyle of Lochalsh, overlooking the Isle of Skye.  This is undoubtedly one of the most scenic rail journeys in Britain.  Rejoin the coach for an equally interesting return tour via Loch Ness.

Sunday – We head south stopping at the highland resort of Pitlochry, a gloriously colourful and vibrant Victorian town surrounded by the most resplendent mountain scenery in Europe.  It is home to two whisky distilleries and offers a wide range of restaurants and specialist gift shops. Our overnight stay is at The Golden Lion Hotel situated in the heart of Stirling town centre.  All bedrooms have recently been stylishly refurbished, all have superbly appointed en-suite facilities and all have flat-screen tv with Sky.

Monday – Homeward journey.
